Forecast, not a sightingTomorrow morning · Mon 26 Oct

Will Kangchenjunga be visible?

Looks promising

Best window 07:00–09:00

Little cloud on the sightline in both models and light foreground haze: conditions like past mornings when the mountain was seen. Not a guarantee.

Conditions look favourable; check for updates before you set off.

GFS 0% max · 0% mean · Lateral scenarios 0%–0%
ECMWF, layers on the sightline 0%

GFS cloud at the ray’s real height (cloudiest cell), and ECMWF cloud in the layers the ray passes through. The worse of the two counts.

Models differ

GFS ≥24 km · ECMWF 12 km · GFS value may be a model ceiling
Humidity 56 / 73 % · Dew-point spread 9.1 / 5.0 °C

GFS and ECMWF visibility and humidity at the viewpoint. A ground-level value, not the whole 134 km sightline.

Method and limits

This is an experimental forecast. “Promising” and “unfavourable” are calibrated against dated news reports of sightings and failed attempts from 2022–2026, matched to the model data. It is not a validated model, and no percentage is shown.

Sightline

A straight ray from your eye to the summit with Earth curvature and refraction (K = 1 and 7/6), checked against the Copernicus DEM every 60 m.

Cloud

GFS cloud and humidity on 17 pressure levels, interpolated to the ray’s real height (±300 m) at each model cell; levels below model ground are masked.

Clarity and haze

GFS and ECMWF visibility and humidity at the viewpoint are kept as raw values and compared like for like; material differences are flagged. CAMS aerosol (AOD) is shown separately for the foreground, plains and mountains instead of one average. None of these is scored yet.

The decision

“Promising” needs a two-hour window where both models show little cloud on the sightline, no fog at the viewpoint, and foreground haze as light as on past sighting mornings (AOD ≤ 0.30, PM2.5 ≤ 80). “Unfavourable” means thick cloud or heavy haze (AOD ≥ 0.5) all morning. The limits are calibrated against dated reports from 2022–2026; this is not a validated model.
